Internet Safety In Primary 7

9th Feb 2024

On Safer Internet Day, Primary 7 children watched a live lesson from the BBC about AI, considering the  benefits and potential hazards to watch out for. This led to a great discussion about how technology has changed – making some in the room feel nostalgic about ‘ancient and old fashioned technology’, such as IPods and landline telephones!! The children then predicted what they think technology will be like in 20 years time.

The children played a game of ‘Wonky Whispers’; as a metaphor for how information and opinions shared online can change and be less accurate the more they are passed along.

The children discussed how to be healthy online, recapping important messages from the past about not sharing personal information. The final activity of the week was looking at different influences and how things we encounter on the internet daily can have a negative influence and are used to make us spend money or access unwanted content.

Some of the children were shocked to find how easily and quickly their passwords could be hacked, when we used a password strength checker: https://www.passwordmonster.com/ The children now know how to make strong passwords – and a plan to make ones they can remember!

Watch out for a video from P7 on how to stay safe online coming later this month!
